HESSDALEN IRRITATIONS
Gerd H. Hövelmann
La rivista Zeitschrift
für Anomalistik
[http://www.anomalistik.de/],
vol. 6 (2006), pp. 58-111, ha recentemente pubblicato
l'articolo "Eine Widerlegung des EMBLA 2002-Berichts zur
optischen Luftraumüberwachung in Hessdalen",
versione in lingua tedesca, con importanti ampliamenti e
modifiche, degli articoli di Matteo Leone "A rebuttal of
the EMBLA 2002 report on the optical survey in Hessdalen"
e "A rebuttal of EMBLA 2002 report on the optical survey
in Hessdalen: further comments". Una versione riveduta
dei medesimi lavori era già apparsa in lingua
inglese sul Journal of Scientific Exploration,
vol. 20:1 (2006), pp. 39-66, col titolo "Questioning
Answers on the Hessdalen Phenomenon".
Conclude il lavoro di Leone un commento di Gerd H.
Hövelmann, filosofo e linguista, già
collaboratore scientifico dell'Università di
Marburg, che ci ha inviato un breve
résumé che pubblichiamo di
seguito.
The magazine Zeitschrift für Anomalistik
[http://www.anomalistik.de/], vol. 6 (2006),
pp. 58-111, recently published the article 'Eine
Widerlegung des EMBLA 2002-Berichts zur optischen
Luftraumüberwachung in Hessdalen', a german language
version, with some addings and modifications of
Matteo Leone articles 'A rebuttal of the EMBLA 2002
report on the optical survey in Hessdalen' and 'A
rebuttal of EMBLA 2002 report on the optical survey
in Hessdalen: further comments'.
A revised version of same works already appeared in
english language in Journal of Scientific
Exploration, vol. 20:1 (2006), pp. 39-66, under the
title: 'Questioning Answers on the Hessdalen
Gerd H. Hövelmann, philosopher and studious of
languages, already at Marburg University, wrote some own
conclusions about the work of Matteo Leone.
Hereby we publish his brief résumé
he send us.
The comment starts out saying that I consider Dr. Leone's
detailed analysis fully convincing as long as Dr. Teodorani
and his colleagues fail to provide proper counter
argumentation. Teodorani's published statements (e.g., those
in the "Journal of Scientific Exploration") that have come
to my knowledge so far are, I think, quite insufficient to
meet that obligation.
I am then making some (more or less obvious, I think)
methodological suggestions for the investigation of
(Hessdalen) lights that are observed not in the sky but
against landscape backgrounds (such as the ones discussed by
Leone), and I state that I find it mildly irritating (hence
the title of the comment) that Teodorani & colleagues
have failed to implement or apparently even consider these
simple measures (systematic control of car traffic and of
spots that are easily accessible to humans, time
synchronization, proper protocols and notes, etc.).
I then go on stating (as Leone himself did) that there are
many reports of luminous phenomena from times before the
invention of automobiles and headlights for which different
explanations (of whatever kind) need to be sought if those
reports provide sufficient details at all. Many of those old
reports, however, today no longer can be saved from
justifiable doubt. They tend become part of folklore rather
than science. To illustrate this, I am quoting, verbatim, a
text passage on luminous nocturnal lights from an old Swiss
chronicle that was compiled around the year 1610. I am using
this particular example because (a) it is historically very
remote and shows that we will probably have no chance
anymore to clarify today what happened 400 ago, even though
(b) there seem to have been several groups of trustworthy
witnesses who reported the same or similar observations, and
because (c) the case, to the best of my knowledge, has not
been mentioned before in the relevant literature.
